The Risk vs Benefit is important to understand and accept as a CSA member. It’s possible that the farm can experience crop failure, poor weather events like flooding or drought, hurricane, etc. As CSA members we would take the hit with the farmer. But most often we experience the benefits of bringing healthy local produce to the neighborhood and our homes, supporting local and alternative agriculture, and building community. We create security for a local farmer (our Farmer!), while benefiting from the convenience of having it delivered right at home, which is really, really fantastic!
Our Farmer is Claudio Gonzalez. He is a Mexican immigrant with 10 years owning his own farm and offering shares of it to CSA's in Harlem and East Harlem. He also sells at Green Markets several times a week. We were one of his first CSA's and our relationship is well established. Claudio uses organic growing practices but is not certified organic.
Our Farm is in Pine Island, N.Y. about an hour and a half away in the Black Dirt Region of southeast New York. Gonzalez’ Farm typically grows: basil, beets, bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, cantaloupe, carrots, celery, cilantro, collard greens, corn, cucumbers, dill, eggplant, kale, lettuce, mint, mixed salad, mustard greens, onions, parsley, peppers, potato, pumpkins, spinach, squash, string beans, swiss chard, tomatoes, turnips, watermelon, winter squash.
Your Share will be made up of a variety of 6-9 vegetables from the list above as they come into season. Shares may vary from week to week and there is no guarantee on the exact amount of contents of shares. The shares will vary in weight and size depending on the time of season. Generally the shares are enough for 2 or 3 people for a week.
Pick-Up is every Thursdays from 5pm to 7:30 pm at El Barrio’s ArtSpace PS109, located at 215 East 99th St. between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. The CSA will run from June 8th to November 2nd, for a total of 22 weeks. If you can not pick up your share, you will need to make arrangements in advance of the distribution time ( send a neighbor or a friend). Otherwise your share will be donated. We cannot store and hold shares!
Volunteers run this show! Our CSA is 100% volunteer run. Every member is required to commit to volunteering for distribution at least once during this season. This means being at the pick up for the shift and assisting members in signing in and gathering their shares. If possible, please consider taking on additional volunteer responsibilities. A strong core group of volunteers makes for a better organized, better serving CSA!
