For reference, the teacher is a self-employed Visiting Music Teacher
Lesson Timetabling
i. Instrumental and Singing lessons are normally 30 minutes and are delivered weekly during school hours.
ii. Longer lessons can sometimes be arranged for more advanced pupils by consultation with the Director of Music and individual music teacher.
iii. Pupils in reception, year 1 to year 10 will miss 30 mins of a different academic lesson each week.
iv. Pupils in year 11, 12 and 13, who are in their examination years, will be given fixed lesson times outside of academic school lessons, wherever possible.
v. Lesson timetables are scheduled through the music department administrative programme 'Involve'. It is sometimes necessary to change lesson times; in these cases teachers will contact pupils or parents directly. Pupils are responsible for remembering their lesson times and attending promptly.
Lesson Fees
i. All our Visiting Music Teachers are self-employed and therefore set their own lesson rate. Rates are liable to change on an annual basis, subject to a term’s notice.
ii. It is expected that 30 lessons are given per academic year, though this number may vary slightly.
iii. Visiting Music Teachers will invoice parents directly. Parents are requested to provide payment promptly upon receipt of the invoice. The Director of Music will liaise with the teacher to cease lessons immediately where payment is not received within 14 days of the date of the invoice. However, the outstanding fee will remain payable, and further action may be taken to recover fees if they are still not forthcoming.
Missed Lessons
i. The teacher is under no obligation to make up a lesson missed by a student, and the full lesson fee would still be payable by the parent. In cases of known absence, at least one week’s advance notice must be given by the student or parent directly to the teacher, although there can be no guarantee that the lesson will be made up.
ii. Lessons cancelled by the teacher will be made up, or not charged.
iii. Lessons missed due to a school event (such as a trip) will, where possible, be rearranged by the teacher, providing the teacher has been given at least one week’s advance written notice of the impending school event by the student and/or parent.
Parent / Teacher Communication
i. The Music Department encourages parents and teachers to quickly establish and maintain a good level of communication, either by telephone, email or through 'Involve'.
ii. Where a disagreement arises between a teacher and a parent, the matter may be referred to the Director of Music.
Termination of Lessons
i. Notice to discontinue lessons must be received by the Music Administrator and the Visiting Music Teacher via email.
ii. It should be noted that where lessons are terminated a full half term's notice is required, this is calculated as 6 working weeks from the receipt of the notice.
iii. The exception to this is in the case of a student’s very first term of lessons, when notice will be calculated as 3 working weeks from the receipt of the notice.
iv. Failure to give notice as detailed above will render the parent liable for the fees of a further 6 working weeks.
Progress Reports
i. Whilst the teacher will make every reasonable effort to help the student to progress, it must be accepted by the parent that progress will not be made if the student does not practise regularly as directed by the teacher.
ii. Feedback on progress will be given by the teacher to the parent via ‘Involve’.
Graded Music Examinations
i. As part of a student’s musical development the teacher may wish to enter the pupil for a graded music examination with the ABRSM in one of the three annual visits arranged by the school.
ii. This must be agreed by the parent, who will be responsible for paying the examination board’s fees as invoiced by the school.
iii. An accompanist for exams can be provided by the school if necessary which may include an additional charge.
Instrument Hire
i. With regard to obtaining an instrument, the school rents to pupils a small number of instruments on a termly basis, for a cost of £20 per term. If an instrument is not available, the Music Department can advise on local music shops’ hire schemes. Parents are advised to make sure that musical instruments are well insured. Notice to discontinue rental of an instrument must be must be received by the Music Department administrator.
ii. In addition to lesson fees there may also be some smaller incidental costs involved. These include the purchase of music, accessories (strings, reeds etc.).
Pupils are required to show a commitment to school music, and when proficient should join a relevant ensemble e.g. orchestra, wind band, string orchestra, brass band or choir. Students are expected to support school concerts when playing in a school ensemble. Music theory and aural classes are offered at no extra charge as advised by the instrumental/ singing teacher.
