Condemning the Racial Profiling of and Use of Force Against a Black Student by Barnard Public Safety on April 11, 2019
We, as students, student groups, alumni, and associates of Barnard College and Columbia University completely condemn the racial profiling of and use of force against a Black student on Barnard's campus on the night of April 11, 2019. In videos circulated online, a Black man is seen surrounded by 6 public safety officers. The video also shows that Barnard Public Safety used force against the student and constrained him on a table at Peet's Coffee in Barnard's new Milstein Center. This happened after he didn't show his ID at the Barnard Main Gate, a casually enforced rule that is instated after 11 PM that many students do not follow and many public safety officers do not enforce. The student's identity as a Columbia University student was questioned and the officers eventually took his ID to "verify" if he truly was a student.

This incident is indicative of the harassment (including sexual harassment) and policing students of color, and particularly Black students, face from public safety officers on Columbia's and Barnard's campuses everyday. In signing this statement, we condemn the racial profiling faced by Black students and other students of color, call upon both schools to address their public safety practices, and call on Columbia and Barnard to reform the training of public safety officers. We believe that all students should feel safe on campus, regardless of their race, nationality, ethnicity, gender identity, immigration status, sexual orientation, religion, or any other identity.
