Dear Parent(s)/Caregiver(s),
Thank you for your interest in our Virginia Tech research study (IRB 25-565) investigating the associations among metacognition, working memory, and math motivation, and their relation to children’s word problem solving performance. “Metacognitive skills” or “metacognition” refer to the understanding of one’s own thought processes. “Working memory” refers to the ability to temporarily hold information mentally to complete a task.
We are recruiting children who are currently in 4th grade during the 2025-2026 year and can read and speak English, and their parents/caregivers, who also need to be able to read and speak English. Your child’s participation consists of a single session which will last approximately 60 minutes.
In this study, your child will complete math problem solving, metacognition, working memory, and math motivation activities with a researcher during the 60-minute session. The session can take place at the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus or in select community-based locations in Roanoke and Floyd. You will stay in an adjacent space while your child completes session activities. While your child completes the session activities, you will complete a brief survey, which will take approximately 15 minutes.
In appreciation of your time, your child will receive small prizes (e.g., stickers, fidget) throughout the session. You will receive $20 cash upon completion of the session and survey.
Please provide answers for the following questions. We will review your eligibility and reach out to you with more details about scheduling your participation in the study.
Thank you for your interest in our project!
