To comply with Federal EPA and Putnam County Health Department regulations we require your assistance identifying the potable water line entering your residence. Please follow the instructions below and thank you in advance for your participation.

To complete this survey, you will need a smart phone (camera), a coin, a key or another tool, and a magnet.

Part 2:  Locate your water service line.
The potable water service line comes into each residence from the street and it is typically found on the lowest level or in the garage. The pipe enters through the foundation or slab near the master shut-off valve. Identify a test area on the pipe between the point where it enters the foundation or slab and the master shut-off valve. If the pipe is covered or wrapped, expose a small area before proceeding to the next step.

Part 3:  Perform a scratch test.
Scratch test instructions: Use the coin, key, or another tool to carefully scratch the pipe (like you would a lottery ticket). If the line is painted, you may need sandpaper to clear a small area.

If the pipe is visibly plastic, you do not have to perform the scratch test.

Part 5:  Perform a magnet test
Place a magnet on the pipe.

Part 6:  Review the information and record findings based on the scratch and magnet tests.  Choose the pipe material from the list below.

Part 8: Submit survey results and photograph 
Take a photo of your service line at a point between the foundation and your master water shut off valve where you conducted your evaluation or scratch test. Example #1 below shows the section of piping to be photographed.  Also, be sure the pipe is clearly shown and labeled with your address.  Example #2 provides guidance on how to label your photograph.  Lastly, be certain to remove insulation or wrap on the pipe before taking the picture.
