You are invited to apply for the SRL Health Video Fellowship!
For the 2020-2021 school year, PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs will offer fellowships to students across the country who have shown a passion and skill for communicating complex topics. During the three-month fellowship, fellows will propose, write, produce and edit a 3-5 minute explainer video on an important health or biomedical science topic, to be published online and shared with their schools.
The Fall 2020 three-month fellowship has begun. Applications are due SEPT 30 2020 for the winter fellowship (Dec 1, 2020 to Feb 28, 2021) and the spring fellowship (March 1 to May 31.)
Why explainer videos? More than half a billion viewers watch educational videos everyday, and channels like VSauce, PhysicsGirl, Vox and Kurzgesagt have pioneered an innovative way to inform young viewers. Fellows will combine published research, video interviews with experts, explanatory graphics and archival footage to create rich, compelling and clear videos explaining concepts ranging from sports medicine to Covid-19 to mental health.
The fellowship is open to SRL students and recent alumni, and can serve as students' work in their school's Lab. Fellows will mostly work individually with fellowship coordinator Eli Kintisch, a Youth Media Producer with SRL and creator of science videos for major explainer channels on YouTube. The fellowship will require 6 to 7 hours per week of student work for three months and will include a $250 stipend. Videos will be produced remotely unless pandemic risks diminish. Supported by the NIH, the project will include a research component to evaluate how the fellowship impacts learning.
