The STEP Lab Application (STress, Emotion & Physical Health Lab)
Independent study is designed to give undergraduates an opportunity to have hands-on involvement with research. Duties include: Preparing materials for studies, preparing questionnaires, attending lab meetings, conducting research projects, working with research participants, collecting physiological data, entering data onto spreadsheets, conducting library research/literature reviews, and for some students, statistical analyses and/or conference submissions. Additionally, there are assigned readings. There are also communication aspects to the lab (e.g., advertising for recruitment, reaching out to the public, disseminating science). Students must commit to a minimum of 2 consecutive quarters of research (ideally more) working a minimum of 12 hours per week. The research in the laboratory is VERY health psychology oriented meaning we will do a lot of work assessing physiology in addition to work on psychological wellbeing and stress. Given this, we prefer students who have taken relevant courses in stress, health psychology, public health, biology (e.g., have knowledge of human physiology), emotion, and other related courses.  An interest and/or experience in emotion and/or positive psychology is also an advantage.

What qualities make for an excellent research assistant beyond? A strong motivation to learn about research and excellent organizational skills are the most important qualities. Other important skills include: being highly responsible, dependable, enthusiastic, and emotionally mature; good verbal and written communication skills; paying close attention to detail; the ability to work well with others in the lab and interact with participants who take part in our studies in a warm and professional manner.

You must have taken at least one introductory level course in psychology to join the lab and have a minimum of a 3.0 average (except under special circumstances).
