Our teams are FIRST Tech Challenge Teams. You can read more about them at firstinspires.org
and select FTC. FTC takes students in grades 7-12. While teams do build a robot, additional activities and tasks utilizing skills including co-operation, effective communication, programming, organization, creative analysis and problem-solving, team branding, budgeting, and fund-raising are prominent and dictate that a successful FTC team incorporate members with a range of skills and strengths.
Our season runs from September through February depending on tournament results. Our teams are formed in the end of summer and begin meeting once per week in September. Meetings are approximately 3 ½ hours on Thursdays. Regularly, the week before a tournament, teams will meet for extra practice time as well on a separate day. Our club is made up of competitive teams that, although fun, function at a high intensity and commitment level. The best way to think about these robotics teams is like sports teams. Each member is an essential part of the team and needs to be able to attend the meetings and the tournaments because they are relying on one another to play a part. As such, we cannot take new members during the middle or end of the season. Our participation fee is $275 per student.
We have multiple single day tournaments (on Saturdays) throughout the fall and into winter. We will attend a minimum of 3 and it is possible that they will all require travel. The Qualifier tournament is held in January and is a two-day event, requiring both travel and over-night accommodations. State is in February and is also a two-day event, requiring both travel and over-night accommodations.
We also recommend checking to see if your child's school already has a team or is interested in starting a team. Our membership is completely dependent on volunteer coaches, therefore, we have to limit membership by the number of adults willing to coach and mentor the teams. We are excited about the growth of robotics in the Tallahassee area and are eager to train new coaches and help programs start in schools!
We will be in contact to share up-coming events and when it is time to begin forming new teams. If you have more than one student interested in joining our club, please fill out one form per student.
