2018 Early American Summer Days Registration
Learn, play and unplug at Storrowton Village Museum’s Early American Summer Days program for ages 7-12. Our unique hands-on approach to history will help 21st century children learn what it was like to be a kid in the 1800s. This year will feature two different sessions, each with fun and educational themed activities, making it possible for children to attend and enjoy both weeks.

Session 1: Invention Week – July 30 to August 3
So many things we use today were created in the 19th century! This STEM-inspired week looks at what they are, how they were made and even some of the young inventors who came up with the ideas. The session will engage problem-solving and teamwork skills in new and exciting ways, like toy boat building, an ice cream making challenge and more.

Session 2: Toys & Games Week – August 6 to August 10
What did fun look like in a tech-free world? This play-inspired week focuses on what kids did when the school day was over and all the chores were done. This session will connect whimsy and creativity in cool and interesting ways, like puppet making, a game maker contest and more.

Both sessions will include a visit to the blacksmith shop to learn about science and chances to explore the Village on a geometry walk and via scavenger hunt. Imagination will be encouraged through creative writing in hand-decorated journals or during activities like pottery, printmaking and mosaics. Children will learn about “old timey” homesteading activities -- such as hearth cooking, butter churning, candle dipping, seed planting, soap making, yarn craft and weaving – and make connections to how these jobs are still done today.

19th century clothing will be provided for children to immerse themselves in a realistic experience. All sessions end with a chance for kids to share their experiences with family and friends. On the last day, loved ones are welcome to watch children perform skits onstage, admire original creations and newly learned skills from the week, and take guided tours of our historic Village. Special program visitors will be announced closer to the program dates.
