We have two programs that we recruit volunteers for, the Allies for Immigrants ESOL Corps and mock interview events. No prior experience in ESOL teaching or tutoring is necessary, but it is a plus. Training is provided. Please be aware that the majority of our programs close over the summer, so our volunteer opportunities are significantly fewer in the summer.
1) Allies for Immigrants ESOL Corps gets volunteers into classrooms to support a classroom teacher, facilitate a small group in an integrated ESOL/technology skills course, lead a conversation group or citizenship class, tutor a student one-on-one, coordinate Allies for Immigrants tutors at a program, and other activities. We currently have nine locations: St. Mark Community Education Program, Gilbert Albert Community Center, Neighborhood of Affordable Housing (NOAH), Maverick Landing Community Services, Gardner Pilot Academy, South Boston en Accion, Mujeres Unidas Avanzando, and ABCD South Side Adult ESOL. We are looking for a weekly or twice-monthly commitment, depending on the program. This program is in partnership with Boston Cares (www.bostoncares.org) and made possible by the Cummings Foundation.
2) Mock Interview events happen throughout the year and are perfect for people who want to get involved but cannot commit to a regular volunteering schedule. We are looking for professionals in many different career areas and are especially interested in those who have experience in HR or hiring, although that is not a requirement. These mock interview events will help immigrants prepare for interviews and succeed in finding better jobs. Additionally, there may be more opportunities to get involved with skills trainings, job fairs, or other career-related events.
