Poetry Summit, August 19, 2017 - RSVP Form
Join us for "Poetic Images: From Flight to Format," a day filled with two, complementary poetry workshops led by Sofia Starnes and Mary Haines.
1. The workshop will concentrate on finding images in usual and not-so-usual places. A warm-up “imagery exercise” will push us beyond the normal connection between words or their normal pairing. This leads us to the runway—an exercise based on a stream of consciousness technique to free the creative mind. It will serve as springboard for writing an in-class poem, to be shared in the latter part of the session. Using both classical and contemporary poems for insight, we will look for the unexpected path: the take-off point is merely the trigger; where we land may be a surprise, even when it is a desired destination. Workshop facilitator: Mary Haines
MARY HAINES, a native of Wisconsin, earned a B.A. in sociology from Milwaukee’s Alverno College, and later an M.A. in English from the University of South Florida where she taught writing. As a military wife for over twenty years, she traveled throughout Europe and East Asia before settling in Virginia. She was a staff writer for Poquoson’s former Island Times, and a freelance writer for The Virginia Gazette and the Daily Press. She has taught poetry workshops and co-hosted poetry readings. Her first poetry book Beads of an Abacus was published by San Francisco Bay Press.
2. This workshop will focus on where and how images can be placed most effectively in our poems. Do they work best alone or with other images? Do they precede the poem or are they something we add to it? How do other writers work (or play) with imagery? The workshop will include commentary on the work of well-known poets and a writing exercise aimed at the usage and placement of images. We will make time to share what we write with one another, but more important will be what we take away from the workshop for use at our desks, when we are alone with a word, an image, and a blank page or screen. Workshop facilitator: Sofia Starnes
SOFIA M. STARNES, Virginia Poet Laureate from 2012 to 2014, is the author of six poetry collections, most recently Fully Into Ashes (Wings Press, 2011) and The Consequence of Moonlight (Paraclete Press, forthcoming). She is also the recipient of a Poetry Fellowship from the Virginia Commission for the Arts, among other commendations, including four Pushcart Prize nominations. Sofia serves as Poetry Editor and Poetry Book Review Editor of The Anglican Theological Review. For more information, please visit
