NYCoRE is 20 years old! And to celebrate 20 years of grassroots organizing, movement building, and justice seeking, we will be celebrating with a year-long conference. In lieu of our traditional day-long conference in March, we will host one "learning session" every month, centering one or two Points of Unity (POU) and highlighting our history and work alongside our comrades. We also hope to use this year to revise and update our Points of Unity in community.
This learning session will be exploring the following questions with these incredible panelists.
Tajh Sutton - CEC 14, Teens Take Charge and BLM at Schools NYC
Natasha Capers - Coalition for Educational Justice
Sam Anderson - The Coalition to Finally End Mayoral Control 2022
Guiding Questions:
How do you define community? What does it mean to have community control of schools?
What are the challenges of community control particularly if the school disagrees on curriculum and structural decisions?
How could people bring this fight to their school community?
During this session, we will be centering and reflecting on the following NYCoRE Points of Unity.
7. Schools should be places of questioning and critical thinking.
The present educational system is derived from an assembly line model that stifles critical thinking by focusing on the regurgitation of facts and information. We believe that all students deserve school environments, teachers, and curricula that are relevant and responsive to their communities. Teaching and learning should enable students to see themselves as transformative agents of change.
8. We believe schools are part of their communities.
Schools should provide a neighborhood space through which all community voices are heard. Teachers are an integral part of this space and must be held accountable to the community by being involved in addressing community needs.
To help make this year-long conference happen, we invite you to make a sliding scale donation to NYCoRE. No one will be denied access to an event for lack of funds, but if you are able to donate, we suggest:
$40-$150 to register for the entire year of events
$5-$20 to register for an individual session
