Howard Marcus Memorial Scholarships
Two scholarships are awarded each year since 1989, one to a boy and one to a girl in the amount of $3,000 per year, renewable for four years. They are payable to the four-year college or university of the awardee’s election, on behalf of the awardee in good standing.
The scholarships are in memory of Howard Marcus, a longtime member of the Wharf to Wharf Race organizing committee, family man, basketball coach, fine attorney, author and patron of youth track & field. In 1983 Howard founded the Star Track Club, precursor to today’s Santa Cruz Track Club. He was among those who dared early to dream of an all-weather track in Santa Cruz County and found a way to build the first at Soquel High School in 1986.
