UAW - CUNY Labor Law Sign-Up
In Summer 2025, UAW Region 9A partnered with the City University of New York School of Labor & Urban Studies to offer an intensive course on Contemporary Labor Studies.  We are now excited to offer a a semester-long Labor Law course for Spring 2026.  Integrated in the course will be both UAW members and members from other unions and the labor movement.  We are offering both an undergraduate and graduate version of the class on two separate nights.

Labor and Employment Law (Undergraduate)
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of law governing labor relations and employee rights in the workplace. The course begins with an examination of the major areas of law as they apply to workers and unions. Topics covered will include the National Labor Relations Act, employee representation, the grievance process, labor's right to organize, the ground rules for collective bargaining, legal aspects of strikes, Weingarten rights, obligation to bargain, and the duty of fair representation. The second part of the course will focus on employment rights at the workplace including statutes regarding discrimination, family medical leave, and workplace privacy. Students will debate and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of labor law in terms of protections for workers and workers' rights and will discuss potential reform of current law.

Labor Law (Graduate)
This course examines the statutes, procedures, and legal remedies as interpreted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and courts concerning the unionization of employees; the collective bargaining process; and the relationship between workers and employers and between employees and their union. The course begins by examining the doctrines of labor law in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and continues with an exploration of the statutory bases of labor law. In subsequent sessions, case law concerning organizing and union recognition; unfair labor practices; collective bargaining; the right to strike and concerted action; arbitration; the duty of fair representation; and discrimination will be analyzed and discussed. Finally, the course will examine and evaluate various interpretations of the political/economic origins of modern labor law and its impact on unions and contemporary labor-management relations.

Cost: 
Members who have CBAs covered by the UAW Region 9A Education Fund in locals 2110, 2179, 2320, and 2325 (LSNYC, MFJ, BxD, NICE, LAS IIU, NYCLU, Monthly Review, Lowenstein & Sons, Levy Ratner) are eligible for reimbursement up to $2,500 annually, mandatory fees (including any application fees), if they enroll in a certificate program.  There is no requirement to continue the certificate program beyond this course once enrolled.  Members eligible for the Ed Fund who do not enroll in the certificate program are eligible for reimbursement up to $1,000.

Graduate Tuition: Tuition: $1,410, Fees: $102.50**, Application Fee: $65

There is no requirement to continue the certificate program beyond this course once enrolled.

We strongly encourage members to use their UAW Region 9A Education Fund tuition benefit, or other collectively bargained tuition benefit to pay for this class.  Members are responsible for all costs either through personal funds, the UAW Region 9A Education Fund, or an employer-sponsored tuition reimbursement fund.

January 27 - May 20, 2026
Undergraduate: Tuesdays, 6:15pm - 9:35pm
Graduate: Wednesdays: 6:15pm - 9:35pm

No Class Undergrad: 2/17, 4/21, 5/26
No Class Grad: 2/25, 4/1, 5/27

Academic credit
Students who enroll as undergraduates will receive 4 credits; students who enroll as graduate students will receive 3 credits.  This course will count towards a certificate or advanced certificate in labor studies, or can be applied towards a Bachelor's or Masters Degree in Labor Studies.

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies is located at 25 W 43rd St 19th floor, New York, NY 10036, all classes will be in-person.
