6. Now, let’s modify this basic goal to make it SMART, and change it from a dream to a plan.  Let’s change it letter by letter, starting with “S” by making it more “Specific.”
Specific
Add details that are required of your milestones to ensure you have answered all of these questions:

Did you include getting the TABE scores required of your Placement Pathway?

If your Profession requires any college, did you mention you will take a college prep track in your HSD classes, or that you will get the college and career readiness scores on the high school equivalency (HSE)tests?

Did you mention that you will focus on the “Knowledge” and “Skills” requirements that are listed on the Occupation page of your Profession?

Example: I will get a 580 on both TABE tests in order to get into my Advanced Training program, and I will get the college and career readiness scores on the G.E.D. while I focus on public speaking and English.
SPECIFIC: Write your response for question 6 below. *
7. Measurable
Make sure your sentence or sentences have a way to track progress and measure your success:

How will you measure your progress?

How will you know if you’re behind?

How will you know when you’ve met your goal?

Example: I will get at least a580on both TABE tests in order to get into my Advanced Training program, and I will get the college and career readiness scores on the G.E.D. while I focus on public speaking and English.  I will complete all of this is two months.
MEASURABLE: Write your response for question 7 below. *
8. Attainable
Modify your goal further to make sure it is realistic by making sure it answers these questions:

Is your goal realistic?•What skills are needed?

What resources are necessary?

Is the goal within your reach?

Are you in control of achieving this goal?

Example: In the next three months, Iwill attend classes and tutoring to get at least a580 on both TABE tests in order to get into my Advanced Training program, I will than take six months to get the college and career readiness scores on the G.E.D. while I will focus on Active Listening and Speaking
ATTAINABLE: Write your response to question 8 below. *
9. Recorded/Relevant
The first part should be pretty easy, since you are writing it down. Just double-check this item:

Are there grammatical or spelling errors that will make it hard to read?

The second part is the “why.” Is it clear to your reader why this is important to you and/or relevant to your career?

How do these tests or diplomas help you meet your other goals?

Example: In the next three months, I will attend classes and tutoring to get at least a 580 on both TABE tests in order to get into my Advanced Training program.  I will then take six months to get the college and career readiness scores on the G.E.D. since I need a college degree for my ultimate career. In addition, I will focus on Active Listening and Speaking since those are skills needed for an Informational Security Analyst, and I do not have those skills fully developed yet.
RECORED / RELEVANT: Write your response to question 9 below. *
10. Time-based
In making sure your goal was Measurable, you make have already addressed this.  Please make sure you have answered these questions:

Is the deadline realistic?
