Background information on marine renewable energy
Renewable energy provides electricity without releasing the greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) is technology to provide electricity from wind power, wave power and tidal power. Offshore wind farms are the most advanced technology to date, with many sites being developed across Europe and globally.
The key challenge is to design and install MRE devices that protect or minimize the impact on biodiversity. The industry works closely with government nature conservation advisors and natural scientists to find ways to limit the impact of wind farms on the natural environment.
