Indicators to evaluate an evaluation software to facilitate implementation of Knowledge Building Pedagogy
My name is Calixto Gutiérrez Braojos and I am a professor at University of Granada.
This message responds to an Advanced Innovation Project which was approved by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) and by the Quality, Innovation and Prospective Unit of the University of Granada, granted to a team of coordinated teachers by Professor Gutiérrez-Braojos. The purpose of this project is to develop an R software capable of facilitating evaluation in Knowledge Building, KB communities which have used the Knowledge Forum technology platform, KF.
Knowledge Building is an educational theory which falls within the deep socioconstructivist paradigm (Bereiter, 2002). This paradigm has its origins in Scardamalia and Bereiter’s works (1994). The pedagogy of KB is based on contemporary educational ideas which Scardamalia classified into 12 principles (Scardamalia, 2002). Applied in the classrooms, these principles make it easier for students to assume collective responsibility during experiences, enabling the construction of ideas.
Since Knowledge Building’s beginnings, different software products have been developed to serve the principles of this pedagogy. Among other computer programs, the Knowledge Forum platform is one of the most prominent programs in the world used to implement KB pedagogy. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the KF has been designed according to the pedagogical principles of KB. In addition, many empirical studies, supported by the KF, support that this platform is highly recommended to enable the collaborative construction of knowledge (e.g. Chen et al., 2015, Ma et al. 2016; Zhang et al., 2012).
In particular, we focus on evaluative technologies that can be associated with KB pedagogy and Knowledge Forum software. Although the platform integrates different technological tools to help the community in the areas of evaluation and monitoring of knowledge construction processes, we intend to develop and evaluate another tool developed in R. To do so, in a first phase, we need to specify indicators that will allow us to evaluate our new tool (e.g. see Scardamalia, Bransford, Kozma, & Quellmalz, 2012). With theses indicators, in a second phase, we intend to estimate the utility (strengths and weaknesses) of the technological tool in order to propose improvements in the software.
In this first phase, we ask for your collaboration to identify characteristics that, in your opinion, should include an evaluation software with potential to facilitate the assessment of a community based on the pedagogy of the Knowledge Building. We also ask you for a justification of each characteristic which you write in this questionnaire. The maximum number of characteristics that can be written is 12. And there is no minimum number of characteristics than can be write in this questionnaire.
