About us: Swipe Out Hunger was founded at UCLA by Rachel Sumekh in 2009, in response to the mounting problem of student hunger during the Recession. Rachel and her friends negotiated with admin to create our core meal sharing program, that allows students to donate unused meals to students experiencing food insecurity. From there, Swipes expanded in size and scope. Now, Swipes is a group of around 30 students committed to ending food insecurity among students through direct services and persistent advocacy. Outside of UCLA, Swipe Out Hunger has spread around the country. Rachel took her idea to state legislatures through a national branch of our organization. At the end of each quarter, you'll see us outside dining halls asking students to donate their remaining swipes. Last year, we collected well over 100k meals that could be distributed back out to students. As of this year, those meals will be loaded directly onto students bruincards. Outside of that program, we glean hundreds of pounds of produce at local farmers markets each month for our campus partners like Cafe 580. At the end of the school year, we collect over a thousand pounds of food with our end of year food drive. Multiple times a quarter, Swipes members cook for the community at our local PATH shelter. All of these programs were started by students, so feel free to start your own once you join!
Swipes is also just a group of students that enjoy food, service, advocacy, and a lot more. We love our volunteering and advocacy, but you can also look forward to our socials and retreats :)

We are looking for motivated, proactive, and enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about making a difference on the UCLA campus and in neighboring communities. Our application process consists of this application and, if selected, a casual interview with a few members of our board. Please answer all questions as honestly as you can, but have fun with it!
