Save London Met University: Stop the 165 job cuts – defend education!
We are alarmed at the proposed 165 job cuts across academic and students support staff at London Metropolitan University. We stand in full solidarity with staff facing redundancies and call upon the Vice Chancellor and Board of Governors to urgently reconsider these plans and stop the cuts now.
This fresh round of cuts at London Met University is not just an attack on staff but also an attack on students and education. Students are set to lose lecturers, staff support, and choice within their degrees and entire courses and departments are at risk of being axed.
Since the Tory-led government came to power in 2010 London Met University has been suffering a spiral of decline, with over 70% of courses being slashed over the past 5 years, thanks to massive government cuts to higher education. Far from further cutbacks, London Met is in desperate need of government investment to expand access to education.
London Met University is an incredibly diverse institution that has provided opportunities to many people who would otherwise be excluded from education. There are more Black students at London Met then the entire top 20 universities combined, and the University supports the largest number of women returning to education in the country.
These proposed job cuts threaten the education and the status of the University. We call upon the Vice Chancellor and the Board of Governors to stop the 165 job cuts.
