SRLP Financial Relief for Self-Determination Application
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. SRLP is a collective organization founded on the understanding that gender self-determination is inextricably intertwined with racial, social and economic justice. Therefore, we seek to increase the political voice and visibility of low-income people and people of color who are transgender, intersex, or gender non-conforming. SRLP works to improve access to respectful and affirming social, health, and legal services for our communities. We believe that in order to create meaningful political participation and leadership, we must have access to basic means of survival and safety from violence.

SRLP recognizes that our community members may face numerous hurdles during COVID-19, alongside our individual journeys of self-determination. This application is intended to assess who in our community has the greatest need for, and would see the greatest benefit from, receiving a one time micro-grant: up to $180. This would be a one time gift, and SRLP has no continuing obligation to continue financial support. However, if more funds become available, members are allowed to reapply for another micro-grant. A micro-grant is a small sum of money or other assistance, given to individuals for the purpose of creating a sustainable livelihood.

The SRLP Micro-grants Committee is focused on allocating funds and reflects the Membership Building Team (MBT) and the Finance and Fundraising Team (FFT) branches of SRLP. The Direct Services Team (DST) is not a part of the SRLP Micro-grants Committee. SRLP’s Collective as a whole may be involved in the nomination process, but it will not be involved in the selection process. In selecting the allocation of funds, the focus will be on merit, need based qualifications, and answers provided within the essay questions. These decisions will be made on a case by case basis, and they will include, but will not be limited to SRLP active membership within the last three years. Some examples of “active SRLP membership” may include community members who have involved in: Prisoner Advisory Committee (PAC), community events (Small Works for Big Change submissions), leadership development (shelter organizing), and activities experience (weekly MBT meetings). Micro-grant resources are limited and will be selected on a rolling basis as funds become available. There is no long-term SRLP obligation to continue fiscal support, but applicants are strongly encouraged to apply if future cycles of funding present themselves.

When filling out this application, please provide as much information as possible, though we understand if some questions are not relevant to you. Please note that some questions may be required and some may be optional. Do your best to answer the application as completely as you can.
