2018 SIGCHI VP Open Call

Over the next few months, we will be looking for members to join the SIGCHI Executive Committee in various leadership and committee member positions The following is the first call for nominations for the following appointed VP positions: Publications, Conferences, Chapters, and Operations. Please see the bylaws for further explanation: https://sigchi.org/about/sigchi-policies/bylaws/#a4 These positions may differ in the times they are appointed so this is a general call for those that are interested now or in the future.

If you know of someone who may be a good candidate that you think we should reach out to, you can indicate that here as well. If you know multiple people, you can fill this form out as many times as you need.

* We are also interested in those who could take on these positions in the future. So, even if you think you aren't ready at this time, but are interested in the near future, please nominate yourself. We may be appointing deputies or committees from those that are interested. *

Here is explanation of each position's responsibilities and requisite skills/experience:

SIGCHI as a branch of the ACM publishes multiple types of content in many different formats. SIGCHI publications include magazines, journals, conference proceedings and companions to conferences. The role of the Vice President for Publications is to manage the process by which scholarship is published, and to ensure that content from SIGCHI venues is top quality. This involves reviewing policies for publications by different conferences and journals for SIGCHI, ensuring that SIGCHI publication policy aligns with ACM publication policy, and supporting conference volunteers and journal editors as they consider changes to their review and publication processes.

To do this, the VP Pubs coordinates closely with the ACM, as the publisher of all SIGCHI content. Additionally, the VP Pubs works closely with the VP of Conferences on conference publication issues, and the VP of Operations in regards to the many systems that SIGCHI uses to conduct reviews and prepare manuscripts for publication.

Required skills:
* Strong written and verbal communication
* Policy development
* Deep experience with systems like PCS
* Volunteer management

Optional skills:
* Experience with different publication formats
* Citation analysis
* Knowledge of diverse global publication norms

SIGCHI currently sponsor 24 conference series which includes CHI and 23 Specialised Conferences which are sponsored (e.g. CSCW and RecSys) or co-sponsored (e.g. UIST and IUI). Each conference series has its own steering committee and we have over 9,000 delegates attending across our family of conferences each year.

The Vice-President for Conferences is responsible for overseeing all aspects of SIGCHI-sponsored conferences. The person in this role serves on the SIGCHI EC and chairs the SIGCHI Council of Steering Committee Chairs and the SIGCHI Conferences Board. The VP for conferences oversees all aspects of SIGCHI-sponsored conferences (and work as described in bylaws), develops the ongoing strategy for the management and evolution of SIGCHI Sponsored Conferences,
refines the strategy and policy for various support programs (inc conference development fund and student travel grants), develops with committees new conference initiatives and maintains oversight on delivery of existing programs and develops policies for the Conferences Board, CSCC and EC to consider

Some example of the regular tasks include :
* Preliminary Approval Form (PAF) and Technical Meeting Request Form (TMRF) approvals for sponsored conferences
* Financial monitoring of conference series
* In-Cooperation requests
* Development fund requests
* SIGCHI Volunteer events
* Support of new conference series

Required skills:
* experience chairing one or more ACM sponsored conference or equivalent
* conference budgeting
* policy development
* financial planning and budgeting
* experience with periodic reporting on programmatic and financial status of activities
* experience with publication processes

Optional skills:
* experience chairing a steering committee of an ACM sponsored conference
* experience chairing committees of upto 30 people
* development of a new conference series
* experience with volunteer development

Vice President for Chapters oversees and promotes the SIGCHI Chapters program, and the relationship between SIGCHI and its Chapters. VP for Chapters serves as the liaison between the Executive Committee, Chapter Officers, and the ACM Chapter Support Staff and provides information and assistance to SIGCHI members considering forming chapters.

Required experience/skills:
* Experience in starting or running a chapter
* Good communication skills, incl. ability to communicate and interact with people with all kinds of backgrounds
* Knowledge of different cultures
* Knowledge of ACM and SIGCHI
* Good organizational skills
* Ability to strategically thinking

The VP of Operations oversees all operational aspects of SIGCHI’s electronic infrastructure, including: e-mail lists, web sites, and databases. This person manages a committee of volunteers to maintain SIGCHI’s electronic and physical infrastructure and serves as SIGCHI’s liaison with ACM’s technical staff as well as SIGCHI's staff of professional developers. This role has taken on considerable scope in the past few years with initiatives like SIGCHI's website revamp, PCS 2.0 interfacing with the ACM DL, and the SIGCHI Conferences Program mobile app.

* Team management and delegation of duties

Optional experience/skills:
* Broad perspective on SIGCHI's processes and infrastructure needs.
