The mission of the Bethany Literacy Clinic is to provide free, targeted interventions in reading difficulties for community students grades K-12 with identified reading deficits. The interventions are provided by Bethany students, primarily students in the Education Psychology, and Communication majors. It is NOT a tutoring program, but rather works to provide specific interventions to fill the gaps that may be holding a student back from becoming fluent readers and writers. This program has as its goal to bring students from below grade level to at grade level reading. It is not an acceleration program.
Families should use this form to apply for a seat in the clinic. The college "coaches" under the direction of Dr. Carrie Pfeifer, assesses and creates one on one instruction based on the assessment results. The sessions are 50-70 minutes in length, and are scheduled at a minimum of two days a week. Sessions are arranged per mutual agreement with the family and the BLC coach. At the conclusion of the interventions a post assessment is given to help chart progress and determine next steps.
All of this is free for the participating student with payment to the coaches and materials covered through the generosity of local and state donors. To respect the commitment of our donors parents are asked to commit to the full term and make every effort to have their student present for each class period. Frequent absences or last minute cancellations may result in termination from the clinic. Our goal for the term is to have a minimum of 20 sessions per students.
It is our preference that coaching sessions happen face to face on the BLC campus in the Education area in the basement of the library; however, in specific situations, we can accommodate families that need hybrid or 100% online.. If a student is an online student, it is expected that the student have a laptop and dedicated learning space and time conducive to intensive intervention. The use of a phone for conducting online sessions is NOT acceptable.
Dr. Pfeifer will notify you that your registration has been received. Families will be contacted by the assigned coach about 3 weeks prior to the beginning of the session (if not sooner).
If you have further questions, do not hesitate to contact the clinic director, Dr. Carrie Pfeifer at
cpfeifer@blc.edu directly.
PLEASE fill out a separate form for each child.
