Workshop Title: Hyphenated No Hyphen

Workshop Description: Afro-Latina. African-American. Poet-Activist. Student-Athlete. Why is it that some people feel the need to hyphen two things coming together? As if their combination doesn’t create a blended mix that runs into the other with no clear divisions. People are multifaceted, hyphenated, but their different backgrounds, characteristics, interests, and skills are not mutually exclusive within their beings. It is important to know this and celebrate this, seamlessly, allowing a person to feel both confident in who they are and seen in this world.
Creative exercises and group discussion will work to demonstrate the inherited juxtaposition growing as one within individuals. Poets will practice highlighting the stark differences that exist in their mind, body, and world, while also learning how to emphasize the fluidity of these elements between one another. It is okay to be more than one thing, belong to more than one group, and find community in more than one place. The workshop will look at poetry that recognizes and celebrates this multifacetedness of people to further engage participants in the complexity of human existence.

Descripción de Taller: Las personas son multifacéticos, pero sus antecedentes, características, intereses y habilidades diferentes no son mutuamente exclusivos dentro de sus seres. Es important saber y celebrar esto, permitiendo que una person se sienta seguro de si mismo y visto en este mundo.
Ejercicios creativos y discusiones en grupo demostrará la yuxtaposición desarollándose como uno dentro de los individuales. Poetas practicarán como enfatizar las diferencias que existen en su mente, cuerpo y mundo, mientras aprendan como enfocarse en la fluidez entre estos elementos. Esta bien ser más de una cosa, ser parte de más de un grupo, y encontrar la comunidad en más de un lugar. Este taller mirará a poesía que reconoce y celebra como de multifacéticos somos.
