NSW Poisons Information Centre (NSWPIC) Data Request Form
Thank you for your interest in NSWPIC data. The NSWPIC is Australia’s largest poisons information centre, taking ~50% of the nation’s 205,000 poisoning calls per year. This includes calls from NSW, ACT and TAS on a near full time basis, and after-hours from other jurisdictions as part of the national roster.
𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮:
Before requesting data, it is important that you are aware of some key limitations. These must be considered when planning your data request and when interpreting and presenting the data.
- Australian PICs are not resourced to routinely conduct follow up calls. Thus, symptoms, severity and disposition are recorded at the time of call to PIC. This means that the data is likely to underestimate severity. We lack complete outcome data so cannot provide accurate details on numbers of hospital admissions, sequalae or deaths.
- Case records in the NSW PIC database are from self-reported calls. They reflect only the information provided when the public or healthcare professionals report an actual or potential exposure to a substance (e.g. ingestion, inhalation, topical exposure etc.) or request for information. Exposures do not necessarily represent a case of poisoning or overdose.
- Not all exposures will be reported to a Poisons Information Centre and therefore the data does not represent total incidence of exposures to any substances.

For privacy reasons, our preference is to provide summary data (simple counts or summary tables). If you require detailed de-identified case listings, or data from free text fields, this can only be provided if there is a strong justification to do so, and may require HREC approval per
𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
Upon accepting our quote, you will be required to sign a standard Conditions of Release form before data can be provided. For case listings, other requirements (e.g. a material transfer agreement) will be necessary.
𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀:
NSWPIC can be engaged to extract and analyse data and provide a written report. This can include prospective data collection if our routinely collected data is insufficient for your purposes. This can be done on a cost-recovery basis. Please contact us if you would like to explore this option.
There are four PICs in Australia, together providing nationwide, 24/7 coverage. We can only provide NSWPIC data. If you require national data, typically this requires contacting each PIC’s data custodian individually. We can provide contact details if required.
