In recent years, migration has rendered the Italian population increasingly multi-ethnic and diverse, yet also afflicted with forms of discrimination and geographical segregation which further exacerbate health inequalities. Precision medicine mines individual traits for personalized treatments. Placing this emerging medical practice within the context of a changing population creates multiple tensions, which this workshop aims at disentangling.
The workshop focuses on strategies to build inclusive representation of varied groups and identities into efforts to advance precision medicine in Italy. Specifically, it aims to chart how inclusive representation could improve both the scientific significance of precision medicine and the societal fairness in distributing its expected medical benefits - thus bringing to the fore the contribution that medical research can bring to societal integration and vice-versa.
The workshop is organized as a public, facilitated roundtable discussion, engaging different stakeholders in an interdisciplinary dialogue on alleviating Italian health inequalities through precision medicine.
