Petition to Protect our Immigrant Communities
To be delivered to: Fairfax Board of Supervisors and other local elected officials.
Across the United States, immigrant communities are under attack. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has expanded its efforts to find and deport immigrants that the federal government considers “removable” from the country.
In Fairfax County, deportations have skyrocketed in recent months. This is possible only because local authorities, including both the Fairfax County Police Department and Sheriff’s Department, continue to provide support to ICE and its brutal deportation system.
We, the undersigned residents of Fairfax County, demand that all agencies of Fairfax County government end their voluntary collaboration with ICE. The county must make good on its claims to support diversity and inclusion for our entire community by adopting policies that will help make this community a safe place for all. At a minimum, we demand that Fairfax County:
- Modify Police Department policies so that agents no longer arrest immigrants because of immigration violations alleged by federal agencies;
- Eliminate Sheriff Department practice of sharing custody information with ICE, including detention release information that allows ICE to take custody of immigrants at the local jail facility;
- Enact Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) policies that protect students and their parents by imposing strict prohibitions on information sharing with ICE and on ICE interrogations on FCPS property.
