Title: Financial and Clinical Outcomes in Pediatric Trauma

Description: The seminar talk will include the financial and clinical outcomes research I have completed over the past year under the mentorship of Dr. Erin Carlton. More specifically, this work focuses on pediatric traumatic injury as an unexpected health event that highlights key gaps in health policy, insurance benefit design, and post-discharge care pathways critical to recovery.

Biography: Mari is a general surgery resident at the University of Michigan. She grew up in rural South-Central Texas and earned degrees in Biochemistry (BS) and Art (BA) from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio in 2018. She received her medical degree from McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston in 2022 and recently completed a Master of Science in Health and Healthcare Research during her first year in the National Clinician Scholars Program (2025-2027).

Mari’s research focuses on the financial and clinical impacts of pediatric trauma, the leading cause of death in childhood. Her work is shaped by her own childhood experiences with Medicaid and by the challenges her patients face while navigating public and private health insurance systems.
