Apply to be a part of the 2014 Youth Organizing Institute Summer Freedom School
YOI SUMMER FREEDOM SCHOOL RUNS FROM JULY 8-25 | Tues-Fri | 10am-4pm | 3 weeks
WE ARE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS UNTIL JUNE 7, 2014!
THE YOUTH ORGANIZING INSTITUTE SUPPORTS YOUTH ORGANIZERS
"We are immigrants and we are US born. We are white, black, and brown. We speak many languages. We are gay and we are straight. We believe in solidarity, we support each other, and we affirm the humanity and dignity of every person. We do not believe in “problem kids.” We believe society has problems and we must be the ones to fix them. We believe in hard work and we believe in fun. We are loyal to each other and dedicated to our values. We got your back. We believe that five fingers clutched together are stronger than each finger on its own."
We honor the legacies of the youth organizers and activists who came before us. We walk in the legacy of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee). We believe in collective direct action.
This summer YOI will honor the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Summer schools, started in 1964 to resist and reverse systematic disenfranchisement of people of color in the south. In 1964 Freedom Schools opened their doors to over 3000 students ranging from age 4 to 60!
We will continue that legacy by remembering and following the mission to train and educate young people to combat systematic oppression in our schools and community. We will hold trainings, field trips, and cultural activities that uplift the history of social movements, teach concrete organizing skills, and create space for creative expression and collective discussion and learning about political concepts.
AT THIS TIME WE CAN ONLY ACCEPT 25 STUDENTS
COMMITMENTS – YOURS AND OURS:
