This application is for the 2018 College Jump Start opportunity in Nome (Application due March 30).
Eligibility: Bering Strait/Norton Sound regional residents between the ages of 17 and 20 who have earned their high school diploma/GED prior to camp start.
This "Jump Start" program was initiated by the NSHC Board of Directors to better prepare regional students for their first semester of college or vocational training. It is developed for students interested in taking an early step towards their college enrollment and degree completion. Based on placement test scores, students will have the opportunity to earn up to 6 college credits during the camp. Students will have the option to complete two of the following four classes offered: Developmental Writing, Developmental Math, a Health Field related course, and an Education Field related course. Job shadowing and career exploration, as well as post-secondary transition preparation and help will be included.
Because students will be earning 6 credits (two classes) during the 13 consecutive classroom days, there are high expectations for students to manage time wisely and stay on task. Several fun, cultural, and adventurous experiences in the evenings and weekends will also be planned.
