Cardiff Cycling Awards - The Final Vote
We were overwhelmed by the number of nominations we received for the first ever Cardiff Cycling Awards. We have whittled them down to four or five top nominees in each category. It's now up to you to decide which is best. You can vote for one nominee in each category. In all categories except the one for potholes you will see the name of the nominee and a descriptive quote from a person who supported that nomination. Voting closes at 12.00 noon on December 12th.
Award 1. Biggest Contribution to improving Cycling in Cardiff
CAR FREE DAY "It was great to see lots of different groups come together and show what is possible. Also it was deemed a success by the businesses who generally saw increased trade."
CARDIFF UNIVERSITY "For sponsoring the Nextbike scheme, and helping so many new stations to be located around the city on its estate."
CLLR CARO WILD "Still loads to do to make Cardiff better for cycling but some tangible improvements in his time as the cabinet member (e.g. Nextbikes and new cycle infrastructure)"
GREENER GRANGETOWN: "Improved the useability and volume of cyclists combined with other great work (water improvements, benches, landscape)"
NEXT BIKE: "Has helped to increase the amount of cycling in Cardiff for both residents and visitors, and has simply improved the visibility of cycling by the sheer number of stations in and around town."
PEDAL POWER "They are a fantastic charity making cycling accessible for everybody!"
SUSTRANS "For all the volunteers who give up their time to maintain and clear the Taff trail"
Award 2. Cardiff School doing most to encourage cycling to school.
RADNOR PRIMARY "Has introduced active travel Tuesday to encourage children to travel actively at least once a week. Children are proud to travel actively and consider the benefits."
YSGOL GLAN MORFA "Cycling lessons, working with Sustrans, lovely new bike parking at new school"
YSGOL GYMRAEG MELIN GRUFFYDD "Consistently at the top of the charts for the annual Big Pedal. But more importantly, the school and parents have successfully campaigned to get the council to ban non-essential motor vehicles from the road outside the school during morning and afternoon 'rush hours.'"
YSGOL HAMADRYAD "Worked with the Council on safe cycling, scooting and walking routes to school. Loads of children already get to school in an environmentally friendly way. Years one and reception have had cycling and scooting workshops and there are very exciting plans in place for the new building. Parents will not be allowed to drive children to school!"
YSGOL TREGANNA "They hold regular safety training, have lots of secure cycle parking on site, and have made sure that there is a safe cycle path to the school."
Award 3. Worst street/path in Cardiff for potholes - there were too many nominations for us to shortlist the individual potholes so we've grouped them into streets.
CAERPHILLY ROAD (BIRCHGROVE SECTION)
NORTH ROAD CYCLE PATH - FROM END OF NEW PATH TO MCDONALDS
ST ANDREW'S PLACE
Award 4. Worst junction for cyclists in Cardiff.
DEATH JUNCTION IN ROATH (Crwys Rd/City Rd/Albany Rd) "No lights for turning which leaves us cyclists vulnerable"
GABALFA INTERCHANGE "The infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians need upgrading. It is out of date and poor quality design."
NEWPORT ROAD (GENERALLY!) "Multiple junctions with very heavy traffic on multiple lanes make turning onto or off Newport Rd extremely unpleasant"
NORTH ROAD/KINGSWAY "Because cycling is (still) banned on Queen St. the detour involves turning right from North road to Greyfriar's road to go West->East. Yet this involves crossing 3 lanes of traffic into the bus lane to turn right."
Award 5. The I Loves the 'Diff Award for the Most Cycle Friendly Business.
ARUP "Involved in multiple cycling projects, offers free Nextbike membership, provides showers and lockers and large amounts of secure bike parking, encourages cycling generally"
CARDIFF METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY "The facilities provided for staff and students at the Llandaff Campus are great. There is plenty of cycle parking and numerous covered shelters. There are changing rooms, lockers and showers. There is a bike users group and free breakfasts are often provided "
PLAN 2 RIDE CAFE "Always putting events on for riders through summer & winter, super helpful staff, they've supported local sportives, and always a friendly bunch."
RIDE MY BIKE CAFE! "It's become a hub for everything that's good about cycling in Cardiff. Campaign meetings, cycle repairs and advice. A real asset."
