Presented by ANROE, the Anchorage Park Foundation, and Alaska Project Learning Tree, the 2026 Alaska Outdoor and Environmental Education Symposium brings together a network of educators, programs, and leaders dedicated to building community, advancing professional skills, engaging in environmental education and strengthening outdoor programs that benefit all of Alaska.

This year, the symposium will be at Kincaid Park Chalet in Anchorage, AK on February 27, 2026 with the theme:

Calling for Session Proposals!

Sessions should highlight the theme and can be indoors or outdoors.

This year, we hope to have an emphasis for lessons that can be taught outside, utilizing space at Kincaid Park (if weather allows) including groomed trails, covered outdoor space, the forest and open outdoor space. (Indoor space will be available to all presenters as alternative option for inclement weather).

Sessions will be concurrent, 1 hour long, and should fall under one or more of the pillars listed.

The Human Factor: This is the pillar that recognizes we all have space to grow and learn with sessions that inform our thinking and programs as a whole. Learning about other’s ways of being and experiences beyond our own strengthens our organizations, creates wonderful places for everyone and can help overcome hurdles that may have existed in the past. Sessions might include: Decolonization communications, trauma informed lesson planning and interactions, Indigenous knowledge sharing, adaptations for all abilities, and how to make programs more inviting to all.

Professional Development: This pillar centers on advancing skills, sharing resources, and keeping up with key trends in environmental and outdoor education. Sessions that utilize the outdoor learning spaces can help participants build outdoor skills or naturalist knowledge, emphasize a connection to nature, and/or challenge educators to try new things to become even stronger as outdoor educators. Indoor sessions for professional development are also welcome and would provide valuable resources and networking opportunities, and showcase the latest approaches to teaching outdoors in Alaska. Examples include: mapping, outdoor safety in winter, winter art, challenge by choice, winter activity sharing, behavior management strategies, connection with nature, traditional knowledge, subsistence activities, integrating science and art in outdoor education, and reflection practices.

Building Bridges: This pillar is a space for sessions that highlight collaboration, partnerships, growing capacity, building connections, supporting each other and communicating in a changing EE climate. Topics could include self-care, community connections, innovative funding ideas, survival techniques, and whatever you want to bring to this network of educators that bridges people, ideas, communities, and knowledge. .
