Mifflin Square Park Health Fair

The Mütter Museum is hosting a free health fair on Saturday, September 7th, 2019 from 1-4pm in Mifflin Square Park (7th and Ritner Streets in South Philadelphia). We are inviting local and city organizations, health care providers and all interested parties to participate. We want to celebrate local institutions who provide us health care and health advocacy.

The health fair is part of a larger project called Spit Spreads Death: The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-19 in Philadelphia, which commemorates the 1918 influenza pandemic in Philadelphia. South Philadelphia was one of the neighborhoods hardest hit by the pandemic. An exhibit about the pandemic will open at the Mütter Museum on October 17th, 2019. You can read more about it here: http://muttermuseum.org/exhibitions/going-viral-behind-the-scenes-at-a-medical-museum/

Along with the health fair and exhibit, we will also be hosting a parade on September 28 to commemorate the 20,000 people who lost their lives in the flu pandemic of 1918. The parade will make its way across Southeast Philadelphia and up Broad Street. Created by interactive artists Blast Theory, the parade of light and sound will remember those who died and honor those who keep us safe today.

The health fair will conclude with a 2019 Fringe Festival presentation of a collaborative nomadic dance-parade called Úumbal: Nomadic Choreography for Inhabitants. Featuring a collective of 100 Philadelphia residents without professional dance experience, Úumbal is an exercise in gathering for the joy of movement in public space. It is a celebration of a diverse collective and is rooted in an exploration of the visibility and health of public bodies. We encourage all to stay and follow the dance from its starting point at 5th and St. Michaels until its conclusion up at Weinberg Park, and then return to Mifflin Square for a block party with the dancers.
