First, to raise the awareness of as many people as possible. From the start, we really want people to have ownership of the process - 'bottom up' rather than 'top down'.
Second, to gain a wide understanding of what we are actually doing as a church. For example, the ministry team may believe that the environment is regularly mentioned in their teaching but the survey may indicate that the congregation is not be aware of this.
Third, to plan a way forward. Once the survey is complete, we will need to decide as a church, if we want to move forward and become more caring of the environment, and then, how we want to move forward. It will be easier to make these decisions if we have all been involved in, and are aware of, the process.
It may well be that the short notes people write to explain their answers will become very important in both building up understanding and in planning a way forward. Even one short note in response to one question, may significantly help our collective thinking.
