Regardless of their position, all members of the AI Institute in Dynamic Systems (AI Institute) and its participants in AI Institute sponsored activities are expected to:
- Abide by the lead institution, University of Washington’s (UW) Community Values.
- Support and encourage each other’s growth and success, and step in as needed to maintain an environment free of discrimination, harassment, and bullying. This includes learning and using best practices for intercultural and diverse collaborations, maintaining the dignity of all individuals and honoring confidentiality.
- Furthermore, AI Institute members and activity participants may not engage in retaliation against anyone for objecting to a behavior that may violate this code, reporting a violation of this code, or participating in the resolution of such a complaint.
In addition to this Code of Conduct, AI Institute members and activity participants are required to comply with UW’s Non-Discrimination and Non-Retaliation Policy, based on federal regulations, which prohibits discrimination or harassment against a member because of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, citizenship, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, or military status.
Reporting Process for Violations to the Code of Conduct
- Report Code of Conduct violation(s) to either AI Institute management directly or to any member of the Broadening Participation (BP) Committee. Information provided to members of the BP Committee will be shared with the full committee, although complainants may request that their identity not be shared. The BP Committee member will also be responsible for reporting the complaint to the AI Institute management. Alternatively, fully anonymous reports may be submitted via the general suggestion/feedback form; however, note that AI Institute management may be limited in their ability to address complaints that do not contain personal identifying information.
- Neither management nor BP Committee members provide counseling or support services; their role is to connect complainants to appropriate resources. They will work to address concerns in conjunction with administration(s) of the relevant institution(s).
- Consequences for Code of Conduct violations may include a verbal or written warning, recommended training(s), removal from AI Institute events, loss of AI Institute membership privileges, reporting to the relevant university offices, or other remedies as appropriate.
Additionally, any reports of violations of UW’s Non-Discrimination and Non-Retaliation Policy will be forwarded to UW's University Complaint Investigation and Resolution Office (UCIRO). Faculty and postdoc members of the AI Institute management and BP Committee are considered responsible individuals under Title IX, meaning they are required to report any learned incidences of gender-based discrimination including sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, and stalking. (See UCIRO’s website for detailed information on their response procedure.)
Resources by InstitutionThe AI Institute in Dynamic System’s Code of Conduct was derived from the codes of conduct from the The NSF AI Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions (IAIFI) and the AI Institute for Research on Trustworthy AI in Weather, Climate, and Coastal Oceanography (AI2ES).

Acknowledging the Code of Conduct
It is important that we all work toward fostering a collaborative, respectful, and welcoming environment, thus we ask all AI Institute members to acknowledge the Code of Conduct.
