This third survey (in the series of UFS Application Surveys) delves deeper into the metrics deemed to be most critical according to the responses of our prior survey. In this survey, we will be asking you about specific metrics for the fields and levels you have identified in previous surveys. We will also ask about recommended regions over which the metrics should be verified and the sources of validation (i.e. "truth") for each field. In the first two rounds of surveys, participants ranked the most critical fields for medium-range forecasting as follows:
PRESSURE LEVEL FIELDS:
Heights at 500 hPa
Temperatures at 850 hPa
U/V Wind Components at 250 and 850 hPa
Ozone at 50 and 925 hPa
SURFACE/SENSIBLE WX FIELDS:
Precipitation
Temperature at 2m
Dew Point at 2m
U/V Wind at 10m
LAND-SURFACE FIELDS:
Soil Moisture at the 0-10 cm and 10-40 cm levels
Latent Heat Flux
Sensible Heat Flux
MARINE/WAVES FIELDS:
Sea-Surface Temperature
Marine Wind Speed
Significant Wave Height

This third survey will refine our initial prioritization from the first two surveys. These topics will also be discussed at the Metrics Workshop (

Thank you for your time and input into the UFS testing and evaluation process!
