Affiliates of AURA Institutions Against Settler Colonialism on Mauna Kea
Aloha nō kākou! This petition has been created to give students, alumni, and affiliates of AURA (Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy) institutions to, with one voice, denounce the act of settler colonialism in the attempted construction of an 18-story telescope on Native Hawaiian, sacred lands. Check off all affiliated institutions and state your affiliation with those universities.
By signing this petition as a student, alumni, faculty, or otherwise affiliated party of a member institution of the Associated Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), I hereby denounce the construction of the Thirty-Meter Telescope on the summit of Mauna a Wākea. I meaningfully object to AURAʻs support of the desecration of indigenous sacred land masquerading as a pure, innocent form of science.
I support an ethical approach to scientific discovery and the free, informed consent of the indigenous people in respect to historical sovereignty claims. Science for the benefit of all of humanity cannot come at the expense of a people-group that currently struggles against their historical disenfranchisement stemming from the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi in 1893.
This history has permeated in myriad ways for the Native Hawaiian people, manifested in the detriment of their physical, mental, medical, and especially spiritual wellbeing, a function only furthered by the planned construction of the TMT on sacred and stolen land. The capital spent towards the construction of the TMT could be utilized to directly alleviate the ongoing issues of houselessness, poverty, health disparities, and cultural deterioration, all functions of American imperialism, but instead is going to support international, wealthy interests in the pursuit of peering light-years away into the universe.
The project and its board has repeatedly noted of the alternative site in the Canary Islands, Spain, yet continues to pressure the Native Hawaiian people to agree to the desecration of sacred land. The site in the Canary Islands would be an ethical alternative that would truly benefit all of humanity without the need to throw indigenous people and their needs to the wayside. I urge the leadership of my affiliated institution to push for AURA to respect the wishes of the Native Hawaiian people in constructing the telescope.
