Virginia Declaration of Learning Application: 2020-21
Deadline: Applications close at 11:59 p.m. EST on February 23, 2020. All applicants will be notified by April 8, 2020.

The Virginia Declaration of Learning (VDOL) program is an immersive teacher professional development program that brings arts and humanities subjects to life and shares the importance of civic engagement through object-based learning. This program is exclusively for educators who work in 4-12th grade social studies, art, language arts, ESL / ELL, gifted & talented, and special education classrooms as well as those who teach as school librarians and media specialists.

The Virginia Declaration of Learning program begins with a five-day summer workshop, The Summit, from August 10-14, 2020. At The Summit, participants will work with representatives from the partner organizations to develop innovative units and lesson plans tied to a student-led, teacher-directed civic engagement project that addresses an issue in their community, state, nation, or world.

Throughout the following school year, teachers will test and refine their unit and daily lesson plans and execute the civic engagement project. Finally, there will be a culminating celebration event in summer 2021. All participants will receive a certificate recognizing 35 hours of professional development for completion of the summer training. A stipend will be provided in installments as required work is completed. There is an opportunity for teacher-created lessons to be published on a national website.

Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. EST on February 23, 2020. Please fill out all requested information. Only completed applications will be considered. This project requires a commitment of time throughout the summer and school year; please only apply if you are willing to complete the entire project. Any questions, please contact DuncanT2@america.gov

NOTE: Please note that partial applications cannot be saved. Applications must be completed and submitted in one sitting.
