The siege of Ottawa and the occupation of border crossings by far-right actors, organizing with a degree of police and political complicity, has spawned a crisis for those who struggle for social and ecological justice, anti-racism, Indigenous sovereignty and genuine democracy. We cannot ignore it. We cannot wait for governments and police to fix this problem. They won’t.
Without more resistance from below of the kind we’re starting to see against the convoy in Ottawa and other cities, we face real threats from:
- The far-right occupying our streets, our neighbourhoods, our political space.
- Empowering police as the solution to fascism with states of emergency.
- More intense, systemic attack against struggles for climate justice, workers’ rights, public health, public education, healthcare, anti-racism and Indigenous sovereignty.
THE FAR RIGHT IS A THREAT TO OUR POLITICAL SURVIVAL. To confront it, we also need to offer a perspective opposed to its agenda: ultra-capitalism and White nationalism.
We must rebuild our power to ORGANIZE during and after the pandemic FOR:
- Safe and decent work for all, regardless of citizenship status
- Truly affordable and safe housing
- Quality, accessible public healthcare and education
- Unemployment insurance for all workers
- An end to systemic racism and police violence
- Urgent action on climate, including the shutdown of pipelines and an immediate and permanent phasing out of fossil fuel production
- Indigenous sovereignty over their territories, bodies and political processes
And AGAINST:
- States of emergency and increased policing
- Austerity, including cuts to public services and programs
Let’s show what solidarity looks like. Please join us and show up for the people in Toronto who have suffered the most during the pandemic: shelterless people, low-income, precariously-employed and frontline workers, healthcare workers, women, BIPOC, people with disabilities.
Let’s open up a space to express our frustration against the far right and government disregard of human needs during the pandemic.
