Saturday, December 28th, 2019 to Saturday, January 4th, 2020
Saturday, December 28th
Welcome to Delhi, one of our favorite cities for innovation. Over the first two days of our tour, you’ll be meeting with inspiring young people and social enterprise projects helping push Delhi forward as a leader for sustainable development in the tourism industry.
We’ll spend two days exploring both sides of the capital city, with our accommodation set in Saket, South Delhi. As we wait for the crew to arrive, we’ll take it easy then head to dinner to get to know each other over delicious north Indian dishes at our favorite restaurant in Green Park. Explore the greenery of Deer Park and walk through the narrow streets of Hauz Khas Village before retreating for an early evening, or grab a few drinks at the bar stops in the village.
Sunday, December 29th
Rise to a quick chai and a snack before jumping over to old Delhi to begin an exciting morning with our favorite Delhi tour organization, Delhi By Cycle. Our 6am rise is well worth the sleepy eyes as we’ll be biking alongside Himanshu, owner of India’s first cycle tour company, as he leads us through the morning bustle of Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazaar and other secret locations that we know you’ll fall in love with. Pose for photos in front of Jama Masjid (India’s largest Mosque!), and take in the sunrise over ancient havelis in the back streets of the spice market.
For lunch, we’ll be stopping by Connaught Place, the central grid of the city, to refuel and assist you in making plans for the rest of your afternoon. Explore CP, stroll through the nearby Gandhi museum, rest your head in Lodhi Gardens (a zero waste park in Delhi!), pose outside of India Gate, or simply hang around CP taking in the sights and smells of the busy city. For dinner, we’ll be meeting in Nehru Place at India’s favorite social hangout, Social!
Monday, December 30th
Take the morning to stretch and enjoy the sunshine before we head out with our friends at Urban Adventures for a day exploring South Delhi. From a street art walk in Lodhi Colony, to meeting the beneficiaries of a local social enterprise in Champi Gali, get ready for a full day of inspiring activities, accompanied by tons of chai, snacks and a yummy lunch.
We’ll be heading to Bikaner by train in the evening. Take the afternoon to eat, shop, drink or rest before packing up for our overnight train to Hara House!
Tuesday, December 31st
Rise and shine at 7am to hop off the train and get your rest on at Hara House. We’ll take the morning slow, with lots of yummy Rajasthani breakfast foods and chai before getting ready for our New Years desert party.
We’ll head out to Chandasar village around 4pm to catch a ride with our village friends via camel to our Hara desert property. Watch the last sunset of 2019 from the middle of the desert, surrounded by new friends, homemade foods, drinks and music. Enjoy traditional Kalbelia dance and music performances, bringing the spirit of Rajasthani arts and culture alive. Dance the night away, celebrating the goodness of 2019, and retreat to our bonfire when in need of a break to reflect and relax.
Wednesday, January 1st
Happy 2020! After a peaceful morning watching the sunrise and eating breakfast cooked over an open fire, we’ll head back into Bikaner to rest and explore the city. After a late lunch, our student guides will be leading you on a walking tour of Junagarh Fort and the market, perfect for our textile and jewelry lovers.
Dinner will be served onsite at Hara House, prepared by Chef Manoj and team. Continue the new year celebrations on our rooftop, or retreat for a good sleep to start off our next day exploring Bikaner.
Thursday, January 2nd
Have you ever walked barefoot with over 30,000 rats? Well, you’re going to this morning! We’ll be exploring Karni Mata Temple, the famous rat temple of India, where goddess Durga is worshipped. Join in on a morning prayer, walk the grounds of the beautiful temple, and try to spot the white rat to bring your new year an abundance of luck!
After exploring more of the village of Deshnok where the temple sits, we’ll head back to Hara House for lunch and rest before setting out to the explore the old city. Take in the beautiful architecture of the Jain Temple, walk the streets of the old city, and pose outside Rampuria Havelis at sunset (labelled as “the pride of Bikaner” by Aldous Huxley!).
Dinner will be a community effort as Chef Manoj teaches us how to make traditional north Indian dishes. Try your hand at rolling round chapatis, spicing your curry, and making the perfect cup of chai.
Friday, January 3rd
Spend your morning crawling under a giant Shiva and sliding into a cave of water guarded by goddesses Laxmi, Saraswati and Kali. Bikaner’s Vaishno Devi temple is a replica of the original located in Kashmir and one of the most fun temple destinations in the city.
Our second stop includes the architectural masterpiece of Devi Kund Sagar, the Bikaner Cenotaphs honoring all the kings of the city.
Following lunch back at Hara House, take the afternoon to explore the rest of the city, from stopping in at Lalgarh Palace for tea, to shopping the back streets of Rani Bazaar.
Dinner will be served a little earlier as we get ready to depart Bikaner and head back to Delhi on an overnight train. Expect beautiful goodbyes, maybe tears, as we say farewell to our beautiful Hara community.
Saturday, January 4th
On our final morning together, we’ll enjoy a sleep in and some breakfast before splitting off to explore more of India or head home. We recommend to take the day to take in more of Delhi before heading off in the evening to your next destination.
