The Program in Public Health, in partnership with the Office of Inclusive Excellence, is offering a quarterly Anti-Racism Seminar Series for all COHS students this academic year.
Date: May 7, 2021
Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Topic: An Introduction to the Asian American Experience
Facilitator: Xavier Hernandez, PhD – Diversity Education Officer, Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences
As we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month this May, the country finds itself at yet another moment of racial reckoning as it grasps with the seemingly random, senseless acts of violence that are targeting Asian Americans nationwide. While the immediate reactions to these tragedies link them to xenophobia and racism that has been perpetuated during the COVID-19 pandemic, they are also part of a much larger history of the Asian American experience. This presentation will provide both historical and contemporary examples of how the Asian American identity has shaped and been shaped by the history of the United States, and how these lessons highlight the growing crisis of racism as a public health issue for all people of color.
