If you are not yet aware, the district has moved to all 7th and 8th graders being 1:1 with a Chromebooks (meaning they have their computer 24 hours a day). The 6th graders will instead have Chromebooks available to them in each classroom, as has been the case for the last two years school wide. Â
While there are some safeguards being put into place, it is not enough. Research shows that reading on non-tech devices strengthens brain connectivity, while excessive screen time can diminish it — a concern echoed by many educators and mental health professionals. Over the past few years, our middle school community has faced repeated, large-scale changes, including shifts in grading systems, schedules, and technology use. These transitions — often rolled out with limited communication or support — have placed a heavy burden on both students and staff. The district has also focused on how to pull back on technology use by providing multiple parent learning opportunities. Â
As parents, caregivers, educators, and community members of Washington Township, we are requesting the district pause the 1:1 Chromebook rollout for middle school students until a transparent, research-backed, and equitable decision-making process is implemented — one that includes formal communication with families, public release of supporting data, and opportunities for meaningful parent input.
