Book Cloth & Button Hole Binding
Using materials created in the previous workshops with Chandra Rice (or your own), learn how to turn any fabric (especially hand dyed ones) into book cloth, and then bind your own book using this button hole stitch. Surprisingly easy to stitch together (once you get the hang of it), they look fancier than they are. Go home with 1 - 3 hand bound journals and plans to make them for all your friends!

If you don’t attend the morning session, eco printed material will be available for purchase from the instructor for $10, or you can bring your own fabric. All other tools and materials are provided and covered in the cost of the workshop.

a little about Chandra
Chandra Rice uses a complex and creative combination of textile, ceramics, glass, and wood to engage the viewer in a consideration of the separation between viewer and creator, questioning traditional dualities such as maker vs. artist; functional vs. fine art; women’s work vs. real work.

Her primary challenge as an artist is the idea that art must say something - most specifically something worth saying. In a world that devalues women’s voices, that celebrates only the visual appeal of our self and our work, that encourages us to be small and self controlled, she strives to strip herself of the voice of the ‘other’. Making is her means to accomplish this.

In her exhibitions and workshops, nationally and internationally, Chandra Rice strives to provide women (and men) with the means to engage directly with exciting materials (as viewers, curators, or creators), encouraging personal growth and meaning-making in each encounter.

Winner of numerous awards and residencies, Chandra Rice exhibits across Canada and Europe extensively, and her work is included in public and private collections in Canada, the USA, England, the Netherlands, and Italy. Known for her energetic and informative workshops, she shares her passion for fibre, ceramics, and natural materials with creatives world-wide.
