Haunted Hollows Day Camp: Summer Haunt Academy

---

Nestled in the shadowy pines, lies Haunted Hollows Day Camp, the summer destination for young enthusiasts of the eerie and the unexplained. This unique day camp, designed for children aged 5 to 15, combines the thrill of a haunted attraction with the hands-on learning of practical skills, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Over the course of five spine-tingling days, campers will embark on a journey through the art and science of creating a haunted spectacle that would send shivers down the spine of even the most seasoned haunt aficionado, ending with the creation of Barking Mad Manor, a haunted house for dogs which will be displayed that weekend at Day of the Dog Festival at Fort Calgary.

Curriculum Overview:

- Prop Building and Set Design: Campers will dive into the world of theatrical design, learning to craft chilling props from everyday materials and to transform ordinary spaces into realms of horror. Guided by seasoned haunters, they'll learn techniques in painting, sculpting, and construction to bring their most ghoulish ideas to life.

- Basic Construction: Safety goggles on for these sessions! Our young builders will learn the basics of constructing safe and sturdy attractions. This includes learning about different materials, using simple power tools, and understanding the importance of safety and stability in their creepy creations.

- Character Development: What's a haunted house without its denizens? In these workshops, campers will invent their own horror characters. From backstory to behaviour, they will learn the art of storytelling and performance to engage and terrify guests.

- Makeup Mastery: Created by the local legends from Don's Costume and Makeup Shop, this module will teach campers the secrets behind transforming into creatures of the night. They'll learn techniques in prosthetics, face painting, and special effects makeup to bring their characters to life.

- Costuming: Campers will get a chance to design and create costumes that complement their haunted characters. They'll learn about different techniques, themes, and how to use and distress fabric and accessories to add authenticity and fear factor to their roles.

- Operational Essentials: A haunted house isn't just about scares; it needs to be safe and well-run. Our young haunters will learn the ropes of customer service, marketing their haunted house, and ensuring safety for both guests and actors. This includes understanding the importance of emergency procedures and crowd control.

Special Highlights:

Guest Speakers: Throughout the week, professionals from the world of haunted attractions, including Haunted Calgary's set designers, actors, and safety experts, will visit Haunted Hollows to share their knowledge and inspire the next generation of haunters.

- Day of the Dog Festival: The culmination of Haunted Hollows' program is the creation of Barking Mad Manor, a student-created haunted house event curated especially for dogs.  It will be on display to the public free of charge at Day of the Dog Festival all weekend, and we encourage family and friends of the campers (and of course their pooches!) to come check it out. This creation allows campers to showcase their hard work, creativity, and learnings, as they scare and amaze visitors with their very own haunted house experience.
