Summer Workshops to Build Power

Join fellow 4121 members across UW for a series of organizing trainings to learn more about what we can each do to help build our collective power, both in preparing for our next contract campaigns and to win on important issues outside of bargaining.

These trainings cover critical skills and information for department stewards, and are particularly helpful for new stewards and activists! However, they're also open to anyone interested in honing their organizing skills and getting more involved.

The sessions build off of each other but are self-standing modules, so feel free to sign up for any and all that you’d like to attend. Zoom information will be sent to the email you RSVP with before the session.

Which sessions can you attend? *

Session 1 (Thurs 6/24, 5:00-6:30pm): 1-to-1 Organizing. This session focuses on building up skills in the key tool for growing our power: one-to-one organizing. This includes talking to our colleagues about membership and other organizing efforts we pursue as a union. All are welcome! This session is particularly helpful for new folks.

Session 2 (Thur 7/1 from 6:00-7:30pm): Empowering Prevention & Inclusive Communities 1.0. EPIC 1.0 focuses on bystander intervention and community building practices to prevent sexual harassment and make our departments and our union a better place for everyone to be. We practice skills like micro-affirmations and calling in and calling out to better understand our power and responsibilities as union leaders.

Session 3 (Thur 7/8 from 5:00-6:30pm): Empowering Prevention & Inclusive Communities 2.0. How do we fix harassment beyond bystander intervention? This training builds on the skills in EPIC 1.0, more focused on changing individual behaviors, to focus on changing the environments we exist in. Together we develop deeper power analyses, discuss strategies for addressing sexual harassment as a structural problem, and make concrete plans for building community and action in your department.

Session 4 (Thur 7/15 from 5:00-6:30pm): Organizing an Empowering New Member Orientation. In this session, we’ll focus on building empowering engagement with new ASEs and Postdocs in our departments. This collaborative session will include workshopping plans for effective orientations, engaging new folks to build relationships early, building political education in our departments, and more.

Session 5 (Thur 7/22 from 5:00-6:30pm): Power Analysis & Building a Departmental Campaign. This session explores the nature and sources of our power as a union, and how we can leverage that power in order to push for change. We’ll discuss the mechanics of powerful departmental campaigns, identifying & activating new leaders, developing a departmental organizing committee, building accountability in organizing, and more. This session is intended for people who have at least some previous experience with 1-to-1 organizing.
