Identifying Barriers Faced by Female Academics in the Chemical Sciences

Participant Information and Consent Form
You are being invited to take part in a research project, funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry's Inclusion and Diversity Fund, that will aim to identify barriers faced by female academics in the chemical sciences and compare these experiences and views across the gender spectrum. The Principal Researchers are Hannah Hilton-Tapp who is attached to the School of Engineering, and Molly Keal who is attached to the School of Chemistry at the University of Leicester. This research is being completed under the supervision of Professor Karl Ryder. This survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. No background knowledge is required.

Before you decide whether to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully.

This project was reviewed by the University of Leicester General Ethics Committee. The application number is 2166. If you have any concerns regarding this after reading the following information, please contact ethics@leicester.ac.uk.

The data collected as part of this study may be used, in part or in whole, for the writing of research articles. At no time would any personally identifiable data be published without consent.

Who can take part?
You have been invited to participate as you are working (or have recently worked before retirement) in academia (this includes postgraduate student researchers, all the way up to professors) and are based in the chemical sciences. If you do not meet the above criteria, we thank you for reading about our research but please do not proceed. Note that people of all genders can take part in this survey.

Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether to take part in this research project. Your participation in the study is entirely voluntary. If you do decide to take part, you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason by contacting one of the researchers at either hoht2@leicester.ac.uk or meek1@leicester.ac.uk. The data you have provided up until you decide to withdraw will not be deleted. If you provide your email address for future contact and choose to withdraw, we will delete this and cease contact.

What data will you collect about me?
This survey will collect demographic data which will include:
  • Race and Ethnicity
  • Religion
  • Gender
  • Sex
  • Age
  • Disability
The survey will also ask questions on the following topics:
  • Applying for jobs
  • Career progression and promotions
  • Funding applications
  • Pregnancy and Parenting
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Workplace Culture/Environment
Some of this data is personal data which is sometimes referred to as "special category" personal data in the UK GDPR.

What will happen to any data that I provide?
We will not collect any data that could directly identify you.

Who will have access to my data?
The University of Leicester is the data controller with respect to your personal data and, as such, will determine how your personal data is used in the research. The University will process your personal data for the purpose of the research outlined above. Research is a task that we perform in the public interest.

The data will be stored for 2 years from the start of the study, and after that, any identifiable personal data will be destroyed. The data will be stored in a secure University research drive repository, accessible only by the Principal Researchers.

What will happen to the results of the research project?
These results will be reported and disseminated in the form of internal reports, conference papers, journal articles, workshops and information sessions, monographs and books. A copy of the findings of the research project will be provided to you if you require it. You can indicate if you want the findings sent to you in the consent form below.
