Join REACH 2023 - 2024
REACH stands for Representing and Empowering AANHPI Community History.

The REACH campaign is working with State Senator John Liu and Assemblymember Grace Lee to advance a bill advocating for AANHPI history to be taught in existing social studies classes. We are hoping to build a coalition that advocated for curriculum reform rooted in solidarity and intersectionality.

Background and Purpose:

New York State is home to some of the oldest AANHPI communities in the United States, yet the curriculum taught in our schools each day does not reflect that. While Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders together make up the fastest growing population in the United States, the vast majority the students graduating from our State’s public schools do so without having a clear understanding of the positive contributions AANHPI populations have made to our country or without having read works by or about AANHPI people.

Exclusion from curriculum has both deeply impacted students of AANHPI descent, who often long to see their experiences reflected in the materials they see in school, and has contributed to long-standing erasure and is a root cause of violence towards Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities. The resurgence of anti-Asian violence is a testament to the urgent need for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders’ history, voices, contributions, civic impact, and moments of solidarity with other communities to be integrated into the existing social studies curriculum. Such inclusive curriculum is vital in 1) preventing racially charged bullying, 2) supporting the identity development of all students, 3) addressing growing mental health issues that stem from feeling unseen or misunderstood, and 4) improving academic performance, attendance rates, and graduation rates.

The legislation we are fighting for creates a foundational model to ensure that voices and histories of all communities are uplifted and reflected in public schools across New York.

Values:

  • We will center solidarity and intersectionality.
  • We will confront the model minority myth in our advocacy and organizing efforts.

  • We will lead with transparency and a community-informed process.

  • We will communicate with clarity, struggles, successes, asks, and anything else that is pertinent to the success of our coalition.

  • We will integrate Culturally Responsive Sustaining Education in our advocacy efforts.

  • We will simultaneously uplift curriculum efforts in other communities.

Campaign Structure:
