Dear Fiske School Parents /Guardians,
The time of year is approaching when we begin to consider the classroom placements for August 2017. Our goal each year is to build balanced, heterogeneous classes where children’s academic and social needs are met individually and as a group. Every effort is made in this process to achieve a balance in several areas such as gender, race, ethnic background, learning needs, social competency, and independence in learning. We have found that when children are grouped appropriately, all students and teachers have the greatest opportunities for success.
The process we use at Fiske School is both thoughtful and thorough. During multiple meetings, grade level teams, specialists, and administrators collaborate to build class lists. The Principal approves the final placement decisions.
Placement is primarily a school responsibility. Parents frequently acknowledge how well teachers know their children. In addition to this understanding by a classroom teacher, there may be information that you feel would be helpful for us to know. Please note that written input is optional and you do not need to fill out the form in order to have your child’s needs considered. If you choose to send us information, we ask that you use the Parental Input Form (below this letter) and submit it via the form below no later than April 13th. The Parental Input Forms below will be inactive after the close of the school day on April 13th (3:30pm). Please do not send this information via e-mail. You should be aware that all input is shared with the teachers at both the sending and receiving grades.
Please understand that requests for specific teachers will not be accepted. If a specific teacher is named, you will be asked to resubmit your input information. Such requests place an unfair burden on the placement team, as they need to consider the needs of all. Additionally, parents are asked to not include the names of friends or learning partners they would like their child/ren to be placed with. Teachers collaborate across the grade level and know students in their classes that will be appropriate learning partners. As we work through placement, we do our best to try and place students with at least one familiar student/learning partner from each class.
Similarly, for students on an IEP (Individualized Education Plan), parents should also not be requesting services providers such as resource teachers, ILP teachers, BCBAs, OTs, PTs, etc. Careful care will be taken to make sure that students are placed with appropriate special educators and service providers during the placement process.
There is one exception to the rule about making specific teacher requests. If one of your children has had a specific teacher and you want a sibling to have a different experience, you may let me know. These situations are rare, but I feel parents and teachers should not have to repeat what may have been a difficult match in the past. This information should be conveyed directly to me in the parental input form as well.
Class placements will be mailed in early August 2017. As noted in communications last year, the summer mailing will not include class lists. The staff and I appreciate your cooperation and support as we continue this process.
