Petition to support all day phone-free schools in AAPS—initiated by ScreenWise Ann Arbor

We, the undersigned parents, guardians, and teachers of students in the Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) district, and community members living in the district, respectfully request that you institute a first-bell-to-last-bell phone-free school policy in the district.

Research shows that a true first-bell-to-last-bell policy, in which phones are stored all day in lockable pouches or centrally-located phone lockers, pencil pouches, or envelopes, is the only solution that prioritizes students’ academic achievement, social-emotional learning, mental well-being, and safety.

All parents want to keep kids safe in emergencies. National School Safety and Security Services reports that cell phones make students significantly less safe in emergency situations.

According to studies, 83% of teachers (NEA) and 56% of parents (DKC Analytics) support an all day phone-free policy. Let's listen to them.

Numerous states and school districts are doing this. Ann Arbor kids deserve no less.

We urge you to adopt the research-based guidelines established by the Phone-Free Schools Movement. These include the most effective storage options, policy exceptions for medical/IEP, ways for students and parents to contact each other during the day, how this will keep kids safer and a robust pre-launch communications strategy.
