John Adams High School Prospective Student "Shadow" Visit 2018-2019
WHAT IS A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT VISIT? Some people refer to it as "shadowing," which is when an incoming student attends classes with an existing student to get a feel for the school, the classes, and student life at John Adams High School.

WHO CAN SHADOW? Any 8th grade student who is interested in attending John Adams. Any 9th-11th grade student from other districts may request to shadow.

WHEN ARE PROSPECTIVE STUDENT VISIT DAYS? Every Friday there is class from October 5 through December 14. There will be additional dates available on Wednesdays throughout that time period. The goal is to have all prospective students view the school before the applications are due. The application for the IB Magnet and Open-Enrollment is due December 15.

Students may select a FULL-DAY visit (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., including lunch), a HALF-DAY MORNING (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.--periods 1, 2 & 3); or a HALF-DAY AFTERNOON (1 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.--periods 5, 6 & 7)

WHAT WOULD BE THE BENEFIT OF VISITING FULL-DAY VS HALF-DAY? Full-day visits are good for students who are coming from private schools with smaller student bodies. It allows the student to get the feel for the larger space and the number of people in the space, particularly during lunch. Half-day visits are good for all students who already kind of know that they want to come to Adams. It's a way for students to dip their toes in without missing a whole day of class.

WHO WILL BE MY STUDENT'S AMBASSADOR?
Your student's ambassador will be in the grade immediately above that of your student, so if your student is a rising freshman, his/her ambassador will be a freshman. This allows your student to see the classes she/he will be in next year.

Prospective students may request a student ambassador; however, all of our ambassadors are vetted for behavior, grades, and schedule, so your requested ambassador may not be available. If your requested ambassador is not available, you will be assigned another ambassador with similar interests. As a matter of safety, PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS MUST STAY WITH THEIR ASSIGNED AMBASSADOR.

WHAT NEXT?
Please pick your top three dates and times. There is a limit of 10 students per day, but we will make every effort to have your student shadow in one of their top three selections. [EDIT (10/11): Due to demand, beginning October 26, there will be 15 slots available for prospective student visits.] You will be contacted by Mrs. Hernandez with the date and time of your student's visit, at which point you can make arrangements with your student's school. Please do not assume that you will automatically get your first choice.

If you have further questions or concerns, please call IB Magnet Coordinator Beckie Hernández at 574-393-5321 or email her at bhernandez@sb.school.
