2019 Yangon Burmese Course Application
Thank you for your interest in the Yangon Burmese Course 2019, which will run from 3 June to 14 June 2019.

Please make sure you read all the information below before completing the application form.

John Okell OBE and Prof Justin Watkins of SOAS, University of London, and Yu Yu Khaing of Cornell University offer a two-week intensive course in Burmese in Yangon. We run classes at all levels from beginner to advanced.

๐—ง๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ:
Classes will run from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday for the two weeks 3 June - 14 June. There are no classes on Saturday 8 and SUnday 9 June.

We will produce a draft timetable before the start of the course, but invariably changes have to be made during the first few days. We aim to offer classes at levels to suit as many people as we can, but please accept that the timetable cannot be tailored to individual needs. We cannot confirm which levels will run, or at what times of the day, until closer to the course starting.

Complete beginners will be allocated two hours of classes a day. Other learners, depending on their level and on timetabling constraints, will be able to attend two hours of classes at a suitable level daily, perhaps with the addition of the grammar clinic class if appropriate.

The location for the 2019 course is not yet confirmed but in previous years we have held the course at the Institut Franรงais on Pyay Road near Hanthawaddy Roundabout. We hope that the course will be held there this year - to be confirmed.

Institut Franรงais de Birmanie (IFB)
340 Pyay Road, Sanchaung Township.
Yangon, Myanmar.

To ensure that all who take the course are in a position to get the most from it, we ask you in the application to be explicit about your ability to commit time to the course. Our understanding of commitment is 3-4 hours of study between classes each day, and in an intensive course there is little point in attending classes if you do not have time for study (e.g. because you are working full-time for the duration of the course). You should not take up a place on the course unless you are certain that you can fit it around work or life commitments.

๐—™๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜:
The course fees are US$400 per person at all levels. The fee is reduced to US$250 for students or applicants without income such as volunteers (we require proof of status).

After being offered a place on the course you must pay the course fee before that place is confirmed. Please only pay when you have been offered a place. We aim to offer all places at the latest by the end of April 2019 so that you can make arrangements for travel or time off work, etc. If you have not paid by 30 April 2019, your place will be unconfirmed and will be open to applicants on the waiting list.

Payment ๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต be in Myanmar-grade mint-condition USD bills of only $100 or $50 denominations, i.e. ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ด๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ $50. (In the past, some have used us as an opportunity to get rid of bad quality dollar bills and loose change!)

Pay your course fee at the cashier of the centrally located cafe and entertainment space:
